A magnospanner was a type of engineering tool used primarily in the 23rd century.
History and specifics[]
The implement used magnetic fields to adjust metallic and non-metal fasteners. Versions of this tool varied from 1 millimeter- to 2 meter-sized units depending on the application, the largest being for mining. A skilled technician could use it to slice an alloy, and its miniature magnetic power generator could be tapped into for emergency use. It served in place of screwdrivers and other socket tools during the 23rd century. (Stardate Magazine vol. 1, Issue 7: "Quartermaster Corps: Magnospanner")
It was also used for adjusting the manifolds of 23rd century starships. By the mid-24th century, magnospanners were rarely used, other than in Starfleet Academy instructional courses. Helga Van Mayter used one in an older ship in 2365. (SCE - What's Past eBook: Many Splendors)
Chief Miles O'Brien once used a magnospanner to repair Garak's shop door. (DS9 - Prophecy and Change short story: "Broken Oaths")
In 2376, Klag thought Starfleet engineers were capable of practically anything given a self-sealing stembolt, some rocks, and a magnospanner. (IKS Gorkon novel: Enemy Territory)
