Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 - 30 January 1948) was a 20th century Human philosopher who was native to the country of India on Earth.
Biography[]
In the early 20th century, Gandhi led a pacifist revolution against the oppression forced upon his country by the British Empire. In March 1930, one of his top aides, Jawaharlal Nehru, was sentenced to six months in prison for violating the Salt Law. Having read of his conviction in The Star Dispatch, Edith Keeler regarded it as unjust. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)
He was finally successful in 1947, when India was granted its independence from the United Kingdom, and soon after became a republic. (Historical Accounts; TOS - The Eugenics Wars novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 1)
Legacy[]
In 2373, a holographic simulation of Gandhi was created by the Doctor aboard the USS Voyager, as part of a study to attempt to expand his personality sub-routines. He discussed the function of sex with Lord Byron. (VOY episode: "Darkling")
In the 24th century, the Federation starship, USS Gandhi, was named in his honor. (TNG episode: "Second Chances"; DS9 episode: "Defiant")
