The Maltese asteroid belt was a planetary ring system.
The Maltese asteroids were the site where a large colony of agricultural domes, called The Armada, was built. The Federation starship USS Enterprise-D visited the belt in the year 2365 to investigate crop failures in The Armada. (TNG comic: "Space Seeds")
