Mandylion V was a planet, the fifth planet of the Mandylion system, located within the Mandylion Rift in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrant.
History and specifics
50 thousand years ago the surface of Mandylion V was scoured and its atmosphere ripped away when its star went nova.
By the 2260s, the planet had somehow regained enough atmosphere to produce bands of clouds with lightning storms. Its surface temperature averaged -120° Celsius. A white powdery-fungus or lichen lived on rock formations and deposited extremely jagged crystalline minerals as it grew, similar to a lifeform on Trager III.
In 2264, the planet was orbited by the starship USS Enterprise, IKS Vengeance, and a warp 15-capable vessel tracked from the Large Magellanic Cloud. Norinda from the vessel proposed a mountain-climbing contest to take place on Mandylion V, with the prize being her vessel. Unaware that she'd already chosen her winner — a Romulan starship cloaked in orbit — James T. Kirk agreed to the contest, allowing expert mountain climber Lieutenant Hounslaw Tanaka to compete against Lord Commander Kaul. Both climbers died during the ascent of a 300-meter mountain on the surface. (TOS novel: Captain's Peril)
- Given Spock's assessment that Mandylion V's new atmosphere contradicted all known theories of planetary evolution, it may have been created by Norinda, a proxy of the Totality.
