The Marcipex were an animal lifeform native to Marcipor II, a planet within the Organian Treaty Zone.

History and specifics[]

In the 23rd century, the Marcipex might have been considered sapient, as it was known to the Federation that they produced artifacts.

As sapience was not proven, however, Klingons decided that they were sub-sentient, and therefore that the Organian Peace Treaty did not apply to their planet. In the year 2267 or 2268, the planet was strip-mined, leading to the extinction of the species.

In 2268, Doctor Helen Gordon recalled the events in light of a similar case on the planet Midgwis, except that they had time to properly study the native Midgwin culture there. (TOS novel: Ghost-Walker)
