The Marco Polo was an Earth exploration vessel from the early 22nd century. It was named after Marco Polo, a famous explorer from Italy on the planet Earth.

History[]

In 2117, the captain of the Marco Polo was curious to discover the cause of irregular X-ray emanations appearing to coming from a neutron star. The ship left Earth and headed to the star, only to learn that the emanations were coming from behind the star, which had been directly in the line of sight between Earth and the phenomena. Once the ship was close enough for the crew to see around the neutron star, the Marco Polo located the source of the signal: two black holes orbiting each other in an unusually-elliptical orbital pattern like the swirl of bolas. The astronomical object was named Polo's Bolos. (TOS novel: The Galactic Whirlpool)
