Marshmallows are an Earth-made, creamy confection; consisting of mostly sugar, corn syrup and water. Usually white in color (but can have added food coloring), they are often used as a garnish for other desserts or to commpliment hot, flavored beverages. They are cylidrical in shape and vary in size. Sometimes added to human breakfasts, Captain Spock's human side grew a fondness of it by itself, roasted, as opposed to the well-known "s'more". A sweet sandwich of Graham cracker, melted chocolate and semi-dissolved marshmallow(s). By the 23rd Century, they were often referred to as "marsh mellons". Another sandwich treat from this was the popular, baseball fan-inspired "Fluffernutter". Peanut butter with marshmallow spread. (TOS movie: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier; ST reference: Star Trek Cookbook)
