Matt was a 24th century beluga whale, a Starfleet officer in the 2380s decade who served in Cetacean ops aboard the Federation starship USS Cerritos under Captain Carol Freeman.
Biography[]
In 2381, Lieutenant Matt worked with fellow beluga whale Kimolu. (LD episode: "First First Contact")
In exchange for swimming in Cetacean Ops, Ensign Douglas once tried bribing Matt with a mackerel. Matt was willing so long as Douglas swam without any clothing. Clothes got in the way of the whales being able to comprehend human body language. (Adventures RPG module: Lower Decks Campaign Guide)
Matt was friends with Honus, Jack Ransom, and Westlake. Ransom kept a photo of them together. (LD episode: "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus")
In 2381, the rogue artificial intelligence Badgey trapped Cerritos personnel in the holodeck. Matt was first welcomed by Fletcher, who mistook him for a dolphin. Brad Boimler asked how Matt could be there, since he clearly didn't walk through corridors into the holodeck entrance. Matt provided a perfectly good explanation in the language of beluga whales. During the lower deckers' effort to earn enough merit points for Badgey to release them, Matt joined Kimolu in overseeing a simulation of Cetacean Ops. (LD video game: The Badgey Directive episode: "Tinker, Techie, Ensign, Spy")
Matt and Kimolu were disturbed to find Boimler unconscious after an apparent attack by a salt vampire. Matt later found T'Ana similarly attacked in Cetacean Ops. D'Vana Tendi set up a trap for the attacker, using salt from Cetacean Ops as the lure, though Matt and Kimolu were concerned that they were the bait. A horny salt vampire was captured, disguised as Andy Billups. (LD video game: The Badgey Directive episode: "The Saline Solution")
Matt's first away team mission while being trapped on the holodeck was a drill based on the USS Enterprise's visit to Argo. Matt and Kimolu came to the aid of Brad Boimler and Sam Rutherford, who had been mutated into water breathers and were being held by Aquans. Kimolu and Matt convinced the Aquan leader to release them. (LD video game: The Badgey Directive episode: "Eau de Ambergris")
T'Illups had Matt transporter-merged with Steve Stevens into the hybrid Swhale Swhalens. (LD episode: "Twovix")
In 2382, while part of an away team on Piskes IX, Matt was inhabited and controlled for some time by Clem, an anaphasic lifeform, leading to the Cerritos requiring maintenance at Starbase 80. (LD episode: "Starbase 80?!")
Alternate realities[]
In an alternate timeline beset by the temporal anomaly crisis, Matt and Kimolu evaded a manifestation of Captain Ahab in Cetacean Ops for a time, but he eventually cornered them, requiring assistance. (ST video game: Timelines mission: "They Task Him")
