Matter anti-matter warp core

A 25th century matter anti-matter warp core in 2409.

The matter anti-matter warp core was an engine technology, a warp core type that was standard issue aboard Starfleet starships by the 2400s decade. Unlike other warp core types, the M/AM warp core did not provide a boost to a ship's power subsystems. As the name suggested, it operated through the reaction between matter and antimatter. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

History and specifics[]

23rd century matter anti-matter warp core

A 23rd century matter anti-matter warp core in 2270.

Matter anti-matter warp cores were a standard aboard Starfleet ships as early as 2256. In that year, such a core was installed on tier 1 Malachowski-class light cruisers. (STO - Age of Discovery mission: "Graduation Day")

In 2270, this core was used by Starfleet on ships like the tier-1 Pioneer-class utility cruiser, and other contemporary ships. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "Earthward Bound")

Other ship classes of the 2270s, like the Atlas-class prototype dreadnought and its contemporary Columbia-class refit of the NX class operated with a dedicated 23rd century version of the matter anti-matter warp core. (STO - Reckoning mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Matter anti-matter warp cores were the default warp drive aboard Klingon Defense Force starships in the 25th century. (STO - Empire mission: "The Hunt is On")

Like other warp cores, the matter anti-matter warp core generally could not be used aboard a contemporary Romulan and Reman warbird, which required a singularity warp core to operate. (STO - From the Ashes mission: "Explore the Flotilla")

In 2410, the Dominion Vanguard Fleet operated with a rare version of the matter anti-matter warp core that boosted a ship's auxiliary power system. This type of M/AM warp core was standard issue aboard the tier 1 Jem'Hadar fighter and tier 5 Jem'Hadar escort. (STO - Engineered for War mission: "Ceremony")
