Doctor Maynooth was a 23rd century Human man. He was a physicist and expert computer programmer who served aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise in the 2260s under the command of Captain James T. Kirk.
Biography[]
Allergic to retinax, Maynooth had deteriorating eyesight and underwent four surgeries by the 2260s to slow its progression, leaving him to wear thick spectacles. He had a willowy voice, scrawny arms, and hawkish nose. He showed a manic enthusiasm for his work, but was demonstrably klutzy. (TOS novel: Crossroad)
By the year 2268, Maynooth was in charge if the ion study laboratory aboard the Enterprise. Commander Spock considered him a brilliant subatomic particle physicist. (TOS novel: Ghost-Walker)
In 2270, during the crew's encounter with a time traveling Nautilus, Maynooth analyzed sophisticated modifications made to the ship's security programs, communications, and other systems. He was exceedingly impressed with their complexity, admiring of the talent required to implement, and found them highly challenging to repair. He was later sworn not to discuss the advanced programming, as it came from people of the 26th century.
Memories of the encounter were subsequently removed from the crew's minds. Maynooth and other physicists thought that they recalled a system having been discovered by a probe in the Crossroad Nebula during this time, but nothing was found at the reported coordinates. (TOS novel: Crossroad)
