The mega-lazer was a piece of fictional technology mentioned in the literature of The Adventures of Captain Proton. When the Captain Proton stories were created in the 20th century, the description of this technology was an example of science fiction.

Fictional history and specifics[]

A mega-lazer was manned by a crew of five and was huge, with its power generator and targeting systems contained in a room 300 feet tall. The weapon was capable of destroying an invading battleship. Earth's planetary defense system was made up of a network of orbiting space stations, each built around one mega-lazer. Additionally, all of the stations could synchronize their mega-lazers into one focused beam, called the "Equalizer", for increased firepower.

In the year 2000, Captain Proton pursued a villain from Seattle to Earth Station Ten. Proton made his way to the meza-lazer room at the core of the station, but the villain had killed its personnel, leaving them floating in zero gravity. (ST - Captain Proton: Defender of the Earth short story: "The City of the Future")

Presumably this was a play on a description of lasers, which was very much an emergent technology at the time the Captain Proton stories are said to have been written.
