Mellanoid worms

Mellanoid slime worms in 2411.

The Mellanoid slime worm was a non-humanoid, gelatinous lifeform from the Milky Way Galaxy. (PRD episode: "Asylum")

Biology[]

Mellanoid slime worms were nearly indestructible due to their gelatinous nature. Metarmophosis, through the process of cocooning themselves, was a component of the worm's life-cycle. While underwater, they could sprout fins and a tail, at least in their more humanoid shape. (PRD episodes: "Crossroads", "Observer's Paradox")

It was later discovered that, having evolved from aquatic sea life, Mellanoid slime worms could only be understood underwater. Other aquatic life such as humpback whales could understand and translate their language. (PRD episode: "Observer's Paradox") Wesley Crusher also displayed an ability to understand Murf. (PRD episode: "The Devourer of All Things")

In the 25th century, Mellanoid slime worms were believed by the Khitomer Alliance to be non-sentient. They came in different breeds and would become loyal to their owner when kept as pets. Their varieties included Prodigious, Midnight, Dusky, Sunburst and Plasmic. (STO website: Incursion: The Prodigy Lock Box!)

(PRD episode: "Lost and Found")

Following a metamorphosis, Murf emerged from his cocoon in a body shape akin to a humanoid toddler, with arms and legs. (PRD episode: "Crossroads")

Following the destruction of the Protostar, Murf was among the crew's survivors who joined Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway as warrant officer-in-training. (PRD episode: "Supernova")

In 2411, Mellanoid slime worms were available as pets to Khitomer Alliance military personnel. (STO website: Incursion: The Prodigy Lock Box!)
