For other uses, see Melponar.

The Melponar class was a 24th century Romulan starship type, a warbird class in Romulan Star Empire service in the 2380s decade. It was a variant of the Mogai-class warbird. (LDs episode: "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus")

In the 2410s, the Melponar was rated a tier 6 legendary temporal ops warbird by the Romulan Republic. The class was operated by the Romulan Republic Navy and the Khitomer Alliance as an upgrade of the 24th century-era Valdore-class heavy warbird. (STO website: Refractions: The Legendary Valdore Temporal Ops Warbird)

History and specifics[]

Melponar triplets warbird

The Melponar triplets' warbird in 2381.

In 2379, the Mogai class was a newer type of warbird compared to the D'deridex-class. Commander Donatra commanded the Mogai-class IRW Valdore. (TTN novel: The Red King)

In the holonovel program Crisis Point II: Paradoxus, written and played by Ensign Brad Boimler of the Federation starship USS Cerritos in 2381, the villainous Melponar triplets serve as joint commanders of such a warbird with a prominent dorsal fin superstructure on the hull. In the fictional setting of Boimler's holographic program, the triplets' warbird easily overpowered the California-class Cerritos but was no match for a Starfleet Sovereign-class explorer. (LDs episode: "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus")

Matsumoto and Melponar

The RRW Melponar alongside the USS Matsumoto in 2411.

In the year 2411, the Romulan Republic refitted the modern Valdore-class heavy warbird into a legendary starship configuration. The class was equipped with dedicated temporal ops Scorpion-class fighter squadrons. The upgrades visited upon the RRW Valdore were applied to the Melponar class. (STO website: Refractions: The Legendary Valdore Temporal Ops Warbird)

Technical data[]

Mogai class variants

The Mogai-/Valdore-class family.

Following the upgrade to Valdore-class legendary starship rating, all temporal ops warbirds shared the same base technical specifications, including the Melponar class. (STO website: Refractions: The Legendary Valdore Temporal Ops Warbird)

Like all ships of the Khitomer Alliance and its Romulan Republic member, warbirds of this class were equipped with transwarp and quantum slipstream drives. They could also equip a displacement-activated spore hub drive, allowing for near instantaneous deployment in four quadrants of the Milky Way Galaxy. (STO - Refractions mission: "Explore the Flotilla")

The refits performed by the Romulan Republic included a probe capable of attaching to an enemy vessel and siphoning off weapons power. It could also be made to self-destruct with a wide area of effect. The Republic also developed a variant design, the Dhael-class. (STO video game: Legacy of Romulus)

Class variations[]

The hull of the Melponar-class warbird allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further at Khitomer Alliance shipyard facilities. For Romulan ships, these liveries included Romulan greens, Reman styles and a mirror universe Romulan appearance. (STO - From the Ashes mission: "Explore the Flotilla")

Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO - Romulan Mystery mission: "Coliseum")
