Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

A friendly reminder regarding spoilers! At present the expanded Trek universe is in a period of major upheaval with the continuations of Discovery and Prodigy, the advent of new eras in gaming with the Star Trek Adventures RPG, Star Trek: Infinite and Star Trek Online, as well as other post-57th Anniversary publications such as the ongoing IDW Star Trek comic and spin-off Star Trek: Defiant. Therefore, please be courteous to other users who may not be aware of current developments by using the {{spoiler}}, {{spoilers}} OR {{majorspoiler}} tags when adding new information from sources less than six months old (even if it is minor info). Also, please do not include details in the summary bar when editing pages and do not anticipate making additions relating to sources not yet in release. THANK YOU

In order to improve the visual quality of the wiki, certain images from non-licensed sources can be added where needed. When uploading such an image, please add {{unapproved|</nowiki>Image name}} to the image notes and post it here under a new topic. You may include the image in an article, so long as you include the {{unapproved|Image name}} template. After 7 days without further voting, the votes will be tallied. In a positive vote, the templates will be replaced with {{approved|Image name}}. In a negative vote, the image will be removed from all pages and deleted.

All supplemental images must meet two broad criteria: 1) There must be a sound rationale as to why we need the image, there must therefore be a requirement for an additional image in an article, and such an image should not already exist from a licensed source. 2) The image must be of sufficient quality; the use of additional images is intended to enhance articles, so poor quality photomanipulations or graphic design might not help towards that goal.

B'Elanna in Klingon uniform

Barge of the Dead screencap

I'd like to bring this one back around for the community to look at. The screencap we currently use (above) is of lower quality and i don't approve of it (it was snuck in without a vote as far as i can tell) -- but this drawing was submitted by the same user and rejected, but I think it has more merit than the screencap. -- Captain MKB 22:00, November 27, 2009 (UTC)

See comment on vote above ^ or in short, we can use a screencap, and therefore dont need this rather odd looking drawing. --8of5 15:15, November 28, 2009 (UTC)

There we go > From the episode Barge of the Dead, does the trick for me, what do you think? --8of5 17:26, November 30, 2009 (UTC)

Well, using the pic of her in the Klingon uniform kind of misses the point. The photoshop and drawing illustrate her wearing an Alliance intendant's getup, which is not a Klingon armor per se. -- Captain MKB 13:33, December 1, 2009 (UTC)

Movie posters and covers of in-universe literature

For most of the films featured in the fictional Star Trek universe, there is fair use availability of their box covers posters and production art. These images should be used to represent the films.

The only point that i feel bears discussion is regarding films that we have in-universe images for -- these are well illustrated as is and the articles may not need another image -- Captain MKB 14:13, August 31, 2014 (UTC)

List of posters being sourced in this manner

List of posters not acquired because they may be unnecessary

  • Animal Control - film's name was seen in Star Trek screengrab, not necessary to replace Trek image with non-Trek image.
  • Death in Arizona - film's name was seen in Star Trek screengrab, not necessary to replace Trek image with non-Trek image.
  • The Day the Earth Stood Still - film scene was seen in Star Trek screengrab, not necessary to replace Trek image with non-Trek image.
  • Frankenstein - film scene was seen in Star Trek screengrab, not necessary to replace Trek image with non-Trek image.

Approvals

Terran Empire flags

Both flags of the Terran Empire have been around this wiki for a long time but were never officially approved for use. The first image is of the Terran Empire's flag and created by Sci in 2006. The other flag was created by Gav236 in 2010. The first file is a .jpg and the second file a .svg. Some inital discussion took place at File talk:Flag of the Terran Empire.svg.

So, with that said, I'm officially (and quite a bit late...) nominating the images for approval.--Long Live the United Earth (talk) 22:36, February 11, 2017 (UTC)

Paris Tree

Yet another early MB image that was never officially approved. This image contains family tree for the Paris family and because it was never put up for approval in the past I am putting it up for approval now. One issue with this photo is that some of the information is off (see the talk page) and it was never updated--Long Live the United Earth (talk) 05:46, February 12, 2017 (UTC)

Yet another old image that was never approved. Here's an image of the MACO patch, based on those seen in Enterprise. Because it was never approved, I'm bringing it up for approval with the other old images. --Long Live the United Earth (talk) 00:59, February 13, 2017 (UTC)

did turtletrekker author this image personally or is there a third party artist who has not given permission for the image to be used? -- Captain MKB 03:53, February 13, 2017 (UTC)

Rutgers University

And yet another supplemental image that needs approved. This one was uploaded in 2013 and is the logo of Rutgers University. I honestly don't think we need this image. --Long Live the United Earth (talk) 03:26, February 13, 2017 (UTC)

The precedent here is using real images to represent real instiutions mentioned in Star Trek - we've put movie posters to vote above, does this extend to real companies and institutions? -- Captain MKB 03:52, February 13, 2017 (UTC)

Generic images for text-only articles

I'm probably going to do a series of these, but with Wikia's ad bars, some readers have joked with me that viewing an article without a pcture can be confusing, as so much photoggraphic material is placed around the article view. Correcting this we would need to have generic images that depict something about the article without actually showing something specifically from something that's never been pictured.

GenericTOSplanetmap

Generis TOS planet map.

This first one is created with two screencaps, from The Paradise Syndrome and Code of Honor, for showing planetary mapping of unseen places from the TOS era (shown on a TOS screen) -- captainmike Wiki-wordmark 19:12, December 17, 2017 (UTC)

Character placeholders

Something I noticed here is that there seems to be no uniformity as to how characters that have never had official art are handled. Some pages include an infobox with a few lines of text and no image, some add an image of the flag or emblem of the allegiance of the character, some have nothing. I thought some uniformity would be cool, so I've been messing around with placeholder images that I'd like to make for unseen male and female characters of major races. Thoughts? AKUSSR (talk) 05:37, March 20, 2018 (UTC)

in the interest of page design, id like to see such images wider than they are taller, so they do not dominate the page - perhaps at a 16:9 or even 2:1 aspect ration, because the sidebars become terribly unmanageable with tall images.
also, our aesthetic here is a soft grey, soft blue on white, so a black background seems more appropriate for the STO wikis or MA. id much prefer a less severe color choice suited for our wiki.
finally, i much prefer stock images that derive in some way from Star trek screencaps or existing imagery - are these your own work or taken from one of the games? -- captainmike Wiki-wordmark 13:37, March 20, 2018 (UTC)
PlaceholderTests1

Tests 1-6

I will adjust dimensions accordingly and re-upload this set. For colors, I tried lighter backgrounds initially but found they looked a little odd with the backlit character portrait. I will experiment a bit and post a few variants. And these are my own work, built from a heavily modified stock head model and bits cut out of episode screenshots. I don't know of any game that has anything like this for a wide range of species, so I figured it would be easier to make it myself. AKUSSR (talk) 13:45, March 20, 2018 (UTC)
PlaceholderTests2

Test 7

I made them a wider format and brought the background colors more in line with the wiki. I still feel a darker background blends better with the portraits...maybe a dark blue/gray behind the portraits, framed by the lighter blues/ white of Memorybeta? AKUSSR (talk) 19:01, March 20, 2018 (UTC)
I think we're getting somewhere with Test 7... AKUSSR (talk) 19:43, March 20, 2018 (UTC)
I really don't think these are neccessary, to be honest. I much prefer the current practice of using icons of flags/seals as infobox images. Those also, do come from actual licensed or canon sources. In conclusion, I vote no on approving these supplemental images. - Bell'Orso (talk) 19:19, March 27, 2018 (UTC)
I agree with Bell'Orso here. If we do keep them, I'd rather have them without the question mark because they call undue attention to the fact that there is something missing from our database. Kind regards, -- Markonian 19:26, March 27, 2018 (UTC)
Support format 7 ... but without questionmark -- captainmike Wiki-wordmarkX 23:24, September 9, 2018 (UTC)
just a bump, i'd be supportive of continuing work on the variant 7 edit i suggested in 2018 - captainmike Wiki-wordmarkX 18:14, June 6, 2020 (UTC)

Constellation.jpg

A user uploaded a STO screengrab of the NX-class vessel Constellation NX-04. As the ship as not appeared in licenced STO material, I guess this is a player's ship with the appropriate naming. Hence, we are looking at a 25th century player ship with the name and presumed look of Constellation NX-04. Do we delete it or keep it? If the latter, it may open the door to using STO to create supplemental images of unseen people/objects. Kind regards, -- Markonian 17:08, September 9, 2018 (UTC)

  • conditional yes -- captainmike Wiki-wordmarkX 23:24, September 9, 2018 (UTC)
my provision for approval: can we safely conclude this is a STO screen-grab? just making sure, as the user provided no attest info regarding this fact. -- captainmike Wiki-wordmarkX 23:24, September 9, 2018 (UTC)
Undecided -- -- Markonian 19:00, June 6, 2020 (UTC)

As far as I can tell (as a STO player), this is an unmodified if well-staged screenshot of a player's NX Class Escort. While I like the idea of using such images to show unseen things from the world of Trek, I am worried it might open a can of worms. -- Markonian 19:00, June 6, 2020 (UTC)

  • to the larger issue: yes, if we can coordinate the sourcing to being made in the game infrastructure and not involving outside artists for textures, backgrounds, etc. which would require further approvals -- captainmike Wiki-wordmarkX 23:24, September 9, 2018 (UTC)
Yes, a case-by-case approach could be an idea. -- Markonian 19:00, June 6, 2020 (UTC)
    • for the sake of accuracy the user removed the "USS" from the ship's name, in both article and image? Why? Was the article wrong? Did the ship or did the ship not use "USS"???? -- captainmike Wiki-wordmarkX 23:24, September 9, 2018 (UTC)
The Constellation stems from Federation: The First 150 Years. Stellar Cartography has a map that ties into F150Y, which gives all Starfleet ships the USS prefix. Plus, the Constellation is one of the ships surviving the Romulan War, and thus into Federation service. As an aside, the Intrepid NX-07 has the USS prefix in the TNG novel Indistinguishable from Magic. Kind regards, -- Markonian 19:00, June 6, 2020 (UTC)

Starfleet Academy silhouetted characters

This is a retroactive record-keeping post regarding silhouetted versions of the chracter images in Starfleet Academy. These are grandfathered in as they were uploaded by User:Turtletrekker at the inception of the wiki about 15 years ago but for the sake of policy and disclosure, they were edited images and have been used with tacit approval for all those years.

A great many newer images that have similar edits made to them, i do consider to be "mutilated" - but these originals from Turtletrekker are quite well done and i'm just adding this as a record that they are acceptable to stay and should not be targeted for deletion or administration without discussion given their status in the site's legacy. i have performed some upkeep on the images to even up the cropping and resaved them and i'm documenting their status as supplemental edits here. in short, they're good -- captainmike Wiki-wordmarkX 18:12, June 6, 2020 (UTC)

I'm fine with keeping them (1) due to the legacy aspect you explained, (2) and because silhouetting is not something we do nowadays for characters, so there's no risk to opening a can of worms. Keep. Kind regards, -- Markonian 19:00, June 6, 2020 (UTC)
