Merak (also known as Latis Cyrtiva, Beta Ursae Majoris or 48 Ursae Majoris) was a star system, a binary star in the galaxy's Alpha Quadrant, in Federation space at coordinates 2.77N 3.22W. Merak was located in Federation space, near the former Cardassian Demilitarized Zone in the Kalandra sector.

History and specifics[]

The Merak system's orbit was the location of a number of worlds, including third planet Merak II and second planet Merak, a Vulcan scientific colony in the 23rd century. (FASA RPG module: The Federation)

Merak is visible from Earth (79 light-years distant) in the constellation of Ursa Major. Merak has a spectral class A1V, and is in the same general vicinity as Lya, Hanolan and the Argolis Cluster. (ST reference: Star Charts)

This star system was the location of Merak Fleet Yards, a Federation shipyard facility in the 23rd century, and was one of three such bases that were the primary suppliers of Epsilon-class cutter starships, and one of two shipyards that construct the Kiev and Babcock-class frigates. Merak's yards are the sole source of Derf-class tenders, and the yards are one of several that produce Greyhound-class warpshuttles. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

No history or specifics are established for this location in Starfleet Command III, as its name was arbitrarily selected for a Federation system on the game map by the game software, with random attributes.
The star system might be related to the Meraki accent, mentioned in TOS novel: The Antares Maelstrom.
