Merak (also known as Beta Ursae Majoris) is a star system, located in Federation space, near the former Cardassian Demilitarized Zone in the Kalandra sector. It is visible from Earth (79 light-years distant) in the constellation of Ursa Major. Merak has a spectral class A1V, and is in the same general vicinity as Lya, Hanolan and the Argolis Cluster. This star system was the location of a Federation shipyard facility in the 23rd century, and was one of three such bases that were the primary suppliers of Epsilon-class cutter starships, and one of two shipyards that construct the Kiev and Babcock-class frigates.
