The Mercury-class was a type of scout starship in service to Earth Starfleet and Federation Starfleet in the mid-to-late 22nd century. (TOS reference: Spaceflight Chronology)
Service history[]
Mars-based Amalgamated Starships was the exclusive manufacturer of the class. With nearly 400 built, the class became Starfleet's leading small scout ship for nearly 30 years. It had a cruising speed of warp three. (FASA RPG module: The Romulan War)
The Mercury-class had a crew of 62 and a mass of nearly 7,000 tons. It entered service four years prior to the Earth-Romulan War, on reference stardate 1/0202. (TOS reference: Spaceflight Chronology, FASA RPG module: The Romulan War)
Circa 2159, about a year before the end of the war, while scouting unexplored regions from which to outflank the Romulan fleet, the Mercury-class USS Cavalier was destroyed by two Romulan cruisers in what became known as the Triangle sector on reference stardate 1/0811.01. - Both Spaceflight Chronology and the FASA RPG use a timeline in which the Romulan War occurred nearly 20 years after the foundation of the Federation, with the Mercury-class being a ship of the Federation Starfleet. However, Star Trek: Enterprise later canonically placed the Romulan War shortly before foundation, 2155–2160. Adapting the Mercury-class to this chronology suggests that it began as an Earth Starfleet vessel, entering service c. 2151.
