The Meret-class was a type of Romulan Star Empire starship used by the Romulan Imperial Fleet in the late 24th century.
History and specifications[]
Referred to as an incursion cruiser, the Meret-class is somewhat unique among Romulan vessels due to its 'open' wing design. Unlike the wing structures of other warbird designs such as the D'deridex- and Mogai-classes, the vessel's warp nacelles were attached to the hull via a pair of forward-angled struts, which was an attempt by the designers to reduce the vessel's weight and enhance its maneuverability at impulse speeds. The class also boasted some of the most advanced cloaking technology available at the time.
Originally introduced in the year 2359, the Meret-class was rushed into mass production following the Empire's renewed contact with the United Federation of Planets in the mid-2360s decade. While the class proved capable at both the patrol and harassment roles, it also proved an ideal platform for covert border crossings into hostile territory and extended duration intelligence-gathering missions, features which made the class very popular the Tal Shiar. Due to the frequent requests by Tal Shiar agents for these vessels during operations, a variant design known as the D'viret-class was developed, which externally resembled the Meret, but was specifically outfitted for intelligence operations.
