Merken Vreenak was a veteran participant in Romulan politics who had a longtime suspicion of the United Federation of Planets.

Early career[]

Vreenak was a staunch Romulan chauvinist. Gell Kamemor thought of him as having a sharp mind, but thought that his decision making process was often clouded by these beliefs. In 2311, as a proconsul, he demanded to examine the USS Universe data himself to search for Federation duplicity. He also remained unconvinced that Admiral Aventeer Vokar was responsible for the attack on the Foxtrot sector, stating that it was uncharacteristic of his behavior. (ST - The Lost Era novel: Serpents Among the Ruins)

Vreenak was elected in 2360. He eventually became the Vice-Chairman of the Tal Shiar, secretary of the War Plans Council and a trusted advisor to Neral. By later that decade, Vreenak had become a member of the Senate. (DS9 episode: "In the Pale Moonlight", ST website:

Dominion War[]

Ardently pro-Dominion, Vreenak negotiated, and signed, the Star Empire's nonaggression pact in late 2373, just days before the beginning of the Dominion War. (DS9 episode: "In the Pale Moonlight")

In late 2374, Vreenak met with Weyoun on Soukara. He later travelled to Deep Space 9 on Benjamin Sisko's request. Sisko, Elim Garak and Grathon Tolar had created a forged holorecording of Weyoun and Corat Damar talking about the invasion of the Romulan Empire. Vreenak later discovered the recording was a forgery and left the station. He was killed when a bomb planted by Garak destroyed his shuttle soon after. His apparent assassination by the Dominion made the Romulans withdraw from the pact and join the Federation Alliance. (DS9 episode: "In the Pale Moonlight")

Spock and Ruanek were talking to Kimara Cretak when Amarik told them of Vreenak's death. (ST short story: "Blood Sacrifice")

Sisko informed Admirals William Ross and Marta Batanides of his involvement in Vreenak's death at a conference on Earth. (DS9 novel: Hollow Men)

The Romulans eventually discovered the truth of Vreenak's death, which led to the Third Great Earth-Romulan War. (NF short story: "Stone Cold Truths")

Vreenak's successor as Vice-Chairman of the Tal Shiar was Koval. (TNG short story: "Suicide Note")

Alternate timeline[]

In an alternate timeline, Starfleet considered Senator Vreenak to be one of several high ranking Romulans to have been replaced by Changelings. (Star Trek: Myriad Universes novel: A Gutted World)
