Meska

Meska (hologram) in his bar.

Meska was a male bartender at BItuHpa on Balka in the 24th century.

His teeth were yellow and his mouth was moist with dripping saliva, and spat as he talked, with bad breath. A stench floated around him. He spoke several languages, including tlhIngan Hol, but he said he spoke just "bartender" language. (TNG novel: Klingon)

He did some businesses on Galor and some of his clients saw him for weapon deals, even though he didn't allow weapons in his bar. He employed two Bolian thugs to keep his rules in the bar. (TNG novel: Klingon)

When Gowron, Pok, with T'Rok and another guard entered the place, Meska didn't recognise the Chancellor of the Klingon High Council, or didn't care who he was; he asked for their weapons and his two thugs approached, while the Klingons closed in around Gowron. Gowron protested about the policy but ordered his men to give their disruptors to the thugs; however he asked to keep their knives, giving his word of honor that they won't use them. Meska snorted at them and turned away, with Gowron noting that the nuchpu' fear the very weapons they sell.

Gowron and Pok sat at the bar, and Meska served them Necti, Pelat and Ora. Gowron paid him with Acta crystals, rare on this sector, which he had marked beforehand. (TNG novel: Klingon)

Seeing that Gowron approached and grasped Aleria, he sent his thugs to stop him, but the Klingons neutralized them. Aleria gave Meska as the person who makes arrangements about weapons. Gowron stopped Meska before he could get away, and brought a glass of poisonous Necti in front of him, with Meska trying to keep his mouth shut. He refused to talk, and Gowron tried to force a sip into his mouth. He lied he had no knowledge who was bringing assassin probes to the sector, but because Gowron did not believe him, splashed some Necti on his face, temporarily blinding him. Gowron lifted him up and Meska admitted that shipments came all the time. Gowron let him down, allowing him to rub his eyes as Gowron asked about the Soltaris system; Meska tried to twist out of his grasp, but Gowron held him and poured the rest of the glass on him making him screaming, confessing that Toofa, a Pakled ship, left 16 hours earlier for Soltaris, but without mentioning he was their buyer.

The Klingon called his guards to depart and told Pok to bring the half-empty bottle of Necti. Meska was terrified begging for his life, when he saw Gowron drinking the rest of it. With this lead, they left. (TNG novel: Klingon; TNG video game: Klingon)

Apparently during, or after that visit, Meska had some exchange with T'lak, Gowron's treacherous guard, and Meska paid him with the Acta crystals, obviously to sabotage his ship with a detonator; but neither of them knew the crystals had been deliberately marked.

Knowing that the Klingons would be after him, Meska had left the planet, making Aleria angry for owing her three weeks' pay. Indeed, the Pakled captains admitted that he sold his shipment to Meska. He had left when the Klingons returned for him, but after T'lak's involvement was exposed they sought him on Galor.

Still on his way to Galor, a few hours later, he was approached by an uncloaked Klingon_bird-of-prey, the Tagana. He hailed them, and he smiled to Gowron; that was until he noticed Aleria behind him, and commented that she was Gowron's new bed partner. Gowron, having a stronger ship, suggested for him to surrender for a honorable death without risking his crew, but Meska, knowing about T'Lak's sabotage, defiantly said he had no intention of dying; this made Gowron to point out his superiority and threaten to destroy them. Meska laughed, and explained he was not a fool working alone, having a man on the Klingon ship. Gowron laughed, mentioning that T'Lak was dead. Meska suggested that T'Lak's presence was enough to sabotage his bird-of-prey, and nodded towards a place in its bridge. A beep was heard and as the Klingons ran to discovered a triggered detonator, Aleria dropped the shields, and was transported next to Meska.

The Tagana responded with a tractor beam. Aleria attempted to negotiate saying that she new the disarming combination for the detonator, and eventually Gowron resealed the beam; only to lock their disruptors on Meska. Aleria, knowing Klingons better than Meska, started being panicked and started spitting out information about the Romulan probe. Meska, still smiling, thought that Gowron was bluffing and told her that it is not like a Klingon opera, and she was embarassing herself. Gowron however said that he did not care about dying, but it was a matter of blood oath to take revenge on those responsible for the assassination attempt. Just a few second Meska realised he was making a mistake. Upon his order, the Tagana, destroyed his vessel, fulfilling the oath. (TNG novel: Klingon; ST video game: Klingon)

Background information[]

Meska was played by TNG actor Michael G. Hagerty.

Whereas in the holodeck representation of the video game he has Bajoran nose ridges, Gowron's narration in the novel mentions him a human.
