You may be looking for author/artist Mike Collins.

Michael Collins (31 October 1930 - 28 April 2021) was a 20th and 21st century Human man, a NASA astronaut. He was famous for having been the pilot of the historic Apollo 11 mission to Luna.

Biography[]

In July 1966, Collins spacewalked during the Gemini 10 mission. He accidentally let go of his Hasselblad camera while taking photographs, and it drifted away too far to retrieve. (Star Trek Annual 1969 article: Star Facts!)

In July 1969, Collins served as command module pilot for Apollo 11. (ST reference: Spaceflight Chronology, TOS novel: Prime Directive)

While Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin visited Luna's surface aboard the lander Eagle, Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module Columbia. While orbiting on the moon's far side, he traveled further from Earth than any previous human, and was entirely isolated from humanity because the moon blocked communications. During that time, he was regarded as the loneliest human being in Earth's history. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Twilight)

Legacy[]

Collins' command module remained a museum exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.. (TOS reference: The Monsters of Star Trek)

In 2269, eight-year-old museum visitor Glynis recited the names of all three Apollo 11 astronauts to Doctor Leonard McCoy. She said knowing this was necessary to get into Starfleet Academy. (TOS novel: Prime Directive)

In 2376, after crashing on the Prentara homeworld, Elias Vaughn recalled Collins' period of lunar isolation. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Twilight)
