Michael Schwerner was a Human man. He served in Starfleet for 23 years, and was the commanding officer of the USS St. Louis in the 2270s. He and Captain James T. Kirk were long-time friends and competitive rivals.

History[]

In 2250 of the Phase II continuity, Schwerner and James T. Kirk joined Starfleet Academy in the same class year.

In 2250 or 2251, Schwerner became the youngest Starfleet officer to reach the rank of lieutenant.

The promotion had to occur before Kirk's own promotion to lieutenant in 2251, following the Axanar Peace Mission, in TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Republic.

Between 2261 and 2273, Schwerner became a starship commanding officer, eventually being attached to the USS St. Louis.

In 2273, the St. Louis was on a mission to find new dilithium sources when it visited the planet Grokh in the Hyades star cluster. Unfortunately, the ship's crew were lured to the surface and killed by the Grokhoor. During an investigation by the USS Enterprise, Schwerner's final log entry was recovered. (Phase II episode: "Are Unheard Melodies Sweet?")
