Microelectromechanical machines (or MEMs) were a type of nanotechnology employed at some point in early Federation or pre-Federation history to repair and rewrite information stored on computer nanodrives.
MEMs were also used on the Kornak-Jabari homeworld, and in the mid 24th century, Doctor Idit Kahayn adapted MEMs to repair the neural cells of living animals. However, for reasons she could not determine, her MEMs began replacing healthy brain cells, as well as connecting and exchanging information with the MEMs in multiple patients, effectively creating a shared consciousness.
