By 2162, he held the rank of ensign, and was the communications officer of the USS Essex under the command of Captain Bryce Shumar.
In that year, he was on duty on the bridge, when the Essex arrived at the planet Sauria, to make the Federation's offical first contact with its inhabitants. He recived the hails of both large nations of the planet: the Global League and the M'Tezir. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures)
In 2165, he forwarded Deltan Prime minister Mod'hira's distress call to Captain Shumar while he was on Starbase 8. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Uncertain Logic)
After the Essex went into drydock for repairs following the Evacuation of Ardan IV, Avila was promoted to lieutenant. He still served on the vessel in February, 2166, when the Essex returned to Sauria to drop off a Starfleet team on the planet. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Patterns of Interference)
