Modala, also known as Beta Damoron V, was a class M planet located in the Beta Damoron star system in the space of the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrants. Modala was the homeworld of the Modalan civilization. (TOS - The Modala Imperative comic: "A Little Seasoning")
History and specifics[]
It had three moons. (TNG - The Modala Imperative comic: "Game, Set and Match!")
Modala was the name given to Beta Damoron V by the natives of that world. In 2256, the planet was considered for membership in the Federation. A small survey team under Lt. James T. Kirk observed its culture, but decided that it needed more time before they met officially.
In 2267, Kirk and Ensign Pavel Chekov visited the planet to assess whether its society was ready for first contact. They found that it had regressed after the Krisaia faction acquired directed energy weapons and took control of the Modalan Senate, eventually enforcing its policies through the Ministry of Order. (TOS - The Modala Imperative comics: "A Little Seasoning", "Tools of Tyranny")
Spock later assessed Chekov as having "served quite well" during his visits to Beta Damoran V and Sharikan, showing "poise under tension". (TOS novel: The Disinherited)
After the visit, rebels overthrew the Krisaia faction, who went into exile as the planet began a prosperous era. (TNG - The Modala Imperative comic: "In Memory Yet Green...")
It was several years before the Federation made official first contact, but eventually Modala joined the Federation. (TNG - The Modala Imperative comic: "Lies and Legends!")
In 2367, Modala hosted 100th anniversary celebrations of their rebellion, and the USS Enterprise-D brought Spock and Leonard McCoy to attend festivities. Ceremonies were interrupted by a Ferengi away team led by Daimon Tran, who revealed that the Krisaia faction had traded advanced weaponry for Ferengi ownership of the planet a century later. (TNG - The Modala Imperative comics: "In Memory Yet Green...", "Lies and Legends!")
After Tran lost a contest of wills to Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Ferengi claims to the world were nullified. (TNG - The Modala Imperative comic: "Game, Set and Match!")
