The Morning Star was a satellite weapon of mass destruction developed by Khan Noonien Singh. It was capable of manipulating a Van Allen belt, being capable of destroying Earth's ozone layer.

History[]

The inception was for the weapon occurred in the 1980s when Flint, under the alias of Wilson Evergreen, detected a hole in Earth's ozone layer. Flint, funded by the United States of America, created the technology to close the hole. At the Da Vinci Research Base, Flint was approached by Gary Seven, accompanied by Khan Noonien Singh. Seven convinced Flint to leave the hole be, noting that its existential threat would be a factor in humanity's maturation, and showing him that his funding was partially owed to the Pentagon, who would seek to weaponize the technology. Before Da Vinci Research Base was destroyed, Seven downloaded all files on the technology, storing it in the Beta 5 computer. In 1989, Khan hacked into the Beta 5, stealing the files on the relevant technology. (TOS novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 1)

As he consolidated his powerbase in 1992, Khan built the Morning Star as a means to demonstrate his resolve to the legitimate rulers of India, expanding the hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica. Aside from Khan, the only one of the Great Khanate who could trigger the satellite was Ament.

After a failed attempt to rally all of the Augment factions under his leadership, Khan nearly turned the Morning Star on Vasily Hunyadi's territory before Ament convinced him that the Romani people in Hunyadi's territory did not deserve such a fate.

In 1994 after the United States and Russia learnt of Khan's biological warfare program, they openly attacked his fortress. With nothing left to lose, Khan positioned the Morning Star above the Arctic Circle and set it to destroy the ozone layer completely. By this point, Khan had installed a secret override to prevent Ament, whom he had disagreed with more and more over the decade, from aborting the sequence. Only minutes before the satellite destroyed all life on Earth, Gary Seven approached Khan and offered him an escape ship. Agreeing, Khan aborted the sequence and promised to lower the Morning Star's defences so Seven could destroy it once he was safely aboard the sleeper ship. (TOS novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 2)
