"Mother's Walk" is a DS9 comic published in the third issue of IDW Publishing's Waypoint anthology. It was released in January 2017 in honor of Star Trek's 50th anniversary and takes place on Major Kira Nerys's 31st birthday.
Description[]
- Major Kira's birthday sees her confronting how she can perform an ancient Bajoran ritual when so many family members needed for the rite are dead. Who can she turn to in her time of need on her special day? And what is the meaning of family when the one you had no longer exists?
Summary[]
Kira spots a constellation from a viewport on Deep Space 9 with some personal significance. It signifies a lost Bajoran tradition called the Shar D'An or mother's walk. She tells Jadzia Dax its history, lamenting that she doesn't have a mother figure to walk with. Her fellow officers each offer to join her, including Keiko O'Brien, but she declines, seeing it as being for Bajoran family members only. She prays on it, and eventually realizes that she has a new family on the space station.
Elim Garak makes her a fabric embroidered with the names Jadzia Dax, Worf, Julian Bashir, Miles O'Brien, Keiko O'Brien, Molly O'Brien, Kirayoshi O'Brien, Benjamin Sisko, Jake Sisko, and others. Dax gives it to Kira in Quark's Bar during Kira's birthday party, and Kira invites them all to join her as her mother figures.

- Artist Megan Levens commented: "It was really meaningful to do a Major Kira story; she was my favorite character, DS9 was my show. Being able to put my mark on that world was really amazing. I was a huge Trekker when I was in junior high and high school. It’s been really interesting to revisit that. Working on Star Trek is sort of a homecoming with me... I just connected to the really strong female friendships I’ve had in my life, and pulled from those emotions. As a transplant to California, I related to the idea of finding a new family in friends and colleagues – I had those emotions in general. I joked with Sarah [Gaydos] that I drew a lot of terrible DS9 fan art in high school... I held myself to such a high standard on the Waypoint story.
