A mountain lion was a predatory feline animal species, Puma concolor, native to the American continents of planet Earth. This species was also called a cougar and a puma. It resembled and was sometimes called a panther, though panthers belong to the Panthera family.

In the 2260s decade, cougars were one of several Earth species brought to Cestus III during Human colonization, along with other animals from American deserts and high plains, as well as from savannah regions in Africa. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Planets of the UFP)
In 2264, Spock visited an island during a shore leave on Earth where cougars still lived, at least according to the inhabitants. He thought this was likely just to promote tourism. (TOS novel: Enterprise: The First Adventure)
