Mountain lion

A mountain lion was a predatory feline animal species, Puma concolor, native to the American continents of planet Earth. This species was also called a cougar and a puma. It resembled and was sometimes called a panther, though panthers belong to the Panthera family.

The star Phi Puma and the Federation starship USS Cougar were named for the animal.

History[]

In the year 2154, Jonathan Archer spotted mountain lion tracks while rock climbing in the mountains with Erika Hernandez during shore leave. (ENT episode: "Home")

In the 2260s decade, cougars were one of several Earth species brought to Cestus III during Human colonization, along with other animals from American deserts and high plains, as well as from savannah regions in Africa. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Planets of the UFP)

In 2264, Spock visited an island during a shore leave on Earth where cougars still lived, at least according to the inhabitants. He thought this was likely just to promote tourism. (TOS novel: Enterprise: The First Adventure)

In 2276, Spock and Leonard McCoy found the fresh carcass of an animal on Sigma 1212 that resembled a bear mixed with a mountain lion. A group of Sigman hunters thought the two officers had killed the animal and led them away with spears. (TOS novel: The Covenant of the Crown)

In 2279, James T. Kirk seeing a drone chew through a Conestoga-class colony ship reminded him of a cougar eating an elephant's leg. (TOS - New Earth novel: Wagon Train to the Stars)

In 2350, after hiking for several hours, a trail collapsed under John Kim's feet. Harry Kim found him unconscious and considered running for help, but feared it would leave his father helpless against mountain lions or bears. (VOY novel: Pathways)

In 2370, Dallas Thorn owned a feline pet as big as a mountain lion named Koshka. Jean-Luc Picard thought it might be sapient. (TNG novel: Infiltrator)
