Summary[]

Quark and chula

Quark studies the chula board.

Commander Benjamin Sisko is looking forward to making first contact with the Wadi, an alien race from the galaxy's Gamma Quadrant. The Wadi led by Falow arrive, but insist on being taken to Quark's for the gaming experiences. Quark is delighted by the opportunity, especially when Falow offers priceless gemstones as collateral. The Wadi begin playing dabo but when Quark tries to rig the game he is found out. Falow introduces Quark a Wadi game called chula and the game begins.

Sisko meanwhile has tired of the Wadi and goes to bed, but wakes up in a strange labyrinthine corridor where he sees Falow, who tells him to "move along home". Finding Kira, Dax and Bashir, the four resolve to find their way out. On DS9, Jake reports his fathers disappearance to Odo, who in turn asks Lieutenant Primmin to start investigating.

In the bar, Quark rolls a dice in the chula game and is told by Falow that his players will meet "The Chandra". In the labyrinth, Sisko finds a young Wadi girl playing a form of hopscotch on floor tiles with Wadi floor tiles on them. When Kira tries to proceed into the room, she hits a force field. Dax notices that the girl is unaffected and she, Sisko, Kira and Bashir copy the girls actions and singing and pass through the force field.

In Quark's, Quark's game move has paid off and he must choose to next take a long path or a short path with high risk. When Odo tells Quark that Sisko, Kira, Dax and Bashir are missing, Quark realises that somehow his four game pieces are representations of the four officers. Knowing this, he takes the longer safer path.

In the labyrinth, Sisko and the others come across a Wadi party and begin coughing as the room fills up with a gas. Realising that the drinks being served are an antidote to the gas, Sisko and the others start drinking. They move on to the next level.

Odo and Primmin meanwhile are investigating the Wadi ship. Odo transports over and finds a room bathed in a bright white light , that he enters, but finds himself back on the station. Quark rolls the dice again, but is told by Falow he has made an unfortunate move and moves a game piece to a different part of the board. In the labyrinth, Bashir is enveloped by a swirling energy field and disappears.

Quark decides that his next move will be to take a shortcut that skips a whole level of the game. Quark rolls the dice, but is told by Falow that he will have to sacrifice a player. Quark begs Falow to not make him choose, so Falow makes the choice for him. In the labyrinth, Dax finds a door that leads to a cave, but a rockfall injures her leg. An earthquake strikes the cave and it begins to collapse, and the only way out is across a crevice over a chasm that Dax will not be able to jump across. Not wanting to leave Dax behind, the three attempt to sidle on a ledge at the edge of the cave while more earthquakes threaten to make them fall. A large quake causes more rocks to fall and the three fall into the pit, but find themselves in Quark's bar, unharmed, and with Bashir with them.

Falow explains that as it was all a game they were never in any real danger. Quark thinks that with their safe return that he was won the game, but Falow points out that as all his players were lost he has lost too. Sisko blames Falow, but Odo points out that the Wadi only made Quark play the game after he cheated them at dabo. Falow offers a rematch one day and despite everything, Quark sees the potential of the game.
