The Murane VIII was a type of early version of transporter that was considered an antique by the 23rd century.

It was an early experimental version of the technology that came from a time where transporters were not considered safe for travel by living beings. The Murane VIII type was constructed to be a frequently modified test bed, it had only a small loading bay. The destination controls on it were also still in testing.

In 2269, a Murane VIII transporter was exhibited at the Smithsonian Annex on Nova Atar. Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise travelled to the museum and saw this early transporter variant. (TOS video game: Judgment Rites)
