History[]
In 2267, Kirk joked to Spock that "Murphy" and "Finagle" should be reassigned to sewage maintenance. He was probably referring to Murphy's Law and Finagle's law, after several frustrating complications arose during the initial boarding of the newly rediscovered generational ship Wanderer. The aside was overheard by Micah Omara and Ussef Stokely, who assumed Kirk had named Murphy and Finagle. (TOS novel: The Galactic Whirlpool)
In 2270, while investigating a seemingly abandoned USS Yorktown, Spock assigned a security detail to cover various portions of that ship. Team members included Murphy, Chopra, Krawchuk, and Willis. After Yorktown personnel were restored, Murphy reported that personnel had been restored to normal on deck nine. (TOS - New Visions comic: "A Scent of Ghosts")
In 2273, Ensign Murphy and Pavel Chekov joined Nyota Uhura, Hikaru Sulu and geologist Scott Mutchler aboard the shuttle Gamow to visit the Dohlman Israi on an Elasian outpost built along the side of the volcano Rakatan Mons on Rakatan. Murphy was killed when their shuttle impacted Rakatan's defense shield and crashed. (TOS novel: Firestorm)
