The mutation serum was a medical treatment, a type of serum that caused mutations in individuals.

History and specifics[]

The mutation serum was developed by the Floes to help them adapt to the changing climate of Floe I, which was becoming increasingly colder due to its orbit widening. The serum was absorbed through the skin by bathing in it, but it could be neutralized by discs. The mutation produced a turtle-like carapace that enveloped the torso to provide warmth in cold conditions but melted off when not needed. The red-skinned Floes refused to give the serum to the blue-skinned Floes, regarding them as inferior.

A USS Enterprise landing party tried to get the serum to the blue-skinned Floes, but they rose up in rebellion, starting a civil war and forcing the Enterprise officers to leave. (TOS comic: "Ice Journey")
