The USS Excelsior showing the NX registry number
NX was a prefix for Federation starship registry numbers since its inception in the late 22nd century, derived from the NCC prefix of the Federation Starfleet.
"NX" stood for "Naval eXperimental", and could refer to any vessel that contained entirely new technologies and/or design concepts – such as the four-nacelle USS Constellation – or merely the first starship of a particular class – such as the new-design USS Excelsior – before it was approved for class production.
It was not applied to all ships that were the first member of their class, especially when it was known that the class would be put into serial production immediately. STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
