Lieutenant Nadia "Chief" Larkin was a member of the Starfleet battalion of 150 under the command of Captain Loomis that was sent to AR-558 to hold a captured Dominion communication array against recapture by Jem'Hadar forces in 2375.

After seven months of prolonged combat with the Jem'Hadar, 107 of Larkin's fellow soldiers died (including Loomis and his second-in-command; Commander Parker) which led to her taking over the surviving troops. The constant deaths, engagements, supply shortages and threat of Houdini mines greatly taxed her strength to the limit and she gratefully stepped down when Captain Benjamin Sisko of the USS Defiant intentionally remained on the planet to help until reinforcements arrived.

Larkin, Reese and Lieutenant Nog were sent on reconaissance to determine the size of the recent Jem'Hadar reinforcements nearby. After finding their camp, the team turned around and retreated but Larkin was shot in the back by phaser fire and killed instantly. (DS9 episode: "The Siege of AR-558")

Both Nog and Reese recalled Larkin later that year. (DS9 episode: "It's Only a Paper Moon", DS9 short story: "Requital")

In 2376, Nog would again remember Larkin and her death at the hands of the Jem'Hadar. (DS9 novel: Cathedral)
