For other uses, see Nautilus.

The Nautilus was an amphibious shuttlecraft, one of two such craft attached to the Federation starship USS Hermes for its mission to Pacifica, circa the year 2310. (TOS - Strange New Worlds II short story: "The Hero of My Own Life")

Specifics[]

Nautilus was a two-person craft outfitted with windows, sea probes, flood lights, airlock hatches, and diving gear. Navigational stabilization programs were able to compensate for extreme turbulence during atmospheric and underwater flight.

Service history[]

In 2310, Captain Nyota Uhura allowed Carol Marcus and oceanographer Gillian Taylor to pilot Nautilus and search for Harpo, a Starfleet humpback whale who'd gone missing. Hermes located a sensor null area with effects similar to a Romulan cloaking device, and when Nautilus got close, the shuttle suddenly lost power and was drawn into a crack within a cliff. Inside was a hidden colonial civilization, and eventually communications were established thanks to Harpo and the universal translator.
