Nautilus was a 23rd century research submarine built on the Federation colony of Timshel.

Specifics[]

Nautilus was constructed to move, sound, and resemble a wampus, an indigenous whale-like creature, in order to study the species and perhaps learn to communicate with them. It had a crew of 8 and could carry 1 or 2 passengers. It had an airlock and a small bridge. It had one private cabin for the CO and two rooms with hammocks used for crew quarters, which by day served as the mess hall with a table for four. Its small galley had a microfusion oven and food lockers that carried frozen and freeze-dried rations. It had a compact restroom. A narrow deck ran outside the hatch. It had an autopilot capable of avoiding obstacles.

History[]

Nautilus operated out of the Wampus research camp more than 1,000 kilometers north of Timshel City.

In the early 2260s, after the Joy Machine took control of Timshel's colony, a few scientists escaped to form a resistance movement. They believed the ship's hull and ocean water were able to block signals from the Joy Machine.

In 2267, Nautilus rescued James T. Kirk from Timshel City and brought him to the base camp. When the Joy Machine later melted the glacier, rebels fled on the backs of wampuses, and Nautilus was rigged with an atomic bomb. En route back to Timshel City, Kirk disconnected the bomb.
