The Navajo, also known as "Diné", were a tribe of Native Americans native to what today is the southwestern United States. Hobelia Pike, the adoptive mother of Starfleet Captain Christopher Pike, was of Navajo heritage (TOS novel: Burning Dreams), as was Starfleet officer Nizhoni. (TOS novel: Ex Machina)

Navajo was also the name of the Navajo people's language. This language was the basis of an encryption code used by the United States during World War II. This idea was paralleled by the Dominion during the Dominion War, who used the language of an aboriginal tribe on the Karemma homeworld for their codes. Bart Faulwell's knowledge of the historical usage of Navajo led to the discovery of this obscure language. (TOS eBook: War Stories, Book One)
