New Worlds, New Civilizations was an in-universe travelogue anthology of significant cultures and vistas in known space in the late 24th century. Showcasing maps and artwork from 19 artists, it was written by Michael Jan Friedman and released by Pocket Books in November 1999. Stories took the form of first-person narratives written by several Federation journalists on assignment as part of a book project, a celebration of peace in 2376 in the aftermath of the Dominion War.

Description[]

"... to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations..."
That is the mission statement of Starfleet, the dedication taken to heart by every starship captain, a mandate that has carried us across countless frontiers. It has uncovered our eyes, expanded our understanding, enlightened our lives. It has opened the door of discovery to all of the citizens of the Federation. And in turn we, ourselves, have been discovered.
Join us now as we set off on our own journey. Hear your footsteps ring out on the decks of a Borg ship, stand beside Klingon warriors as they welcome home their hero and new chancellor, feel the heat of the deadly firestorms of Bersallis III. You can travel the walkways of Starbase 11, experience the "reality" of the Q Continuum, and breathe the desert air of Vulcan. In New Worlds, New Civilizations you can be the one to boldly go.''

Background[]

  • Author Michael Jan Friedman described the stories as, "Possibly the best work I've ever done... The artwork in these is spectacular. It would be one thing to have a book with some of their illustrations in it and say 'wow, this is fantastic.' But to have such a wide spectrum of beautiful stuff in there! ... I got to shine a light on every interesting corner of the Star Trek universe. It was a great experience." (ST reference: Voyages of Imagination)
  • The Pocket Books Timeline sets all stories from this anthology between VOY episode: "The Voyager Conspiracy" and DS9 novel: A Stitch in Time after Bajoran Ha'mara in 2376. However, some of the stories seemed to take place, or reference events, both prior to and after the Dominion War. The in-universe journalists may have taken artistic license or combined recent observations with earlier experiences made prior to being assigned to the book project.
