For other uses, see York.

New York was an 18th century gunboat, an aquatic vessel in service to the American Continental Navy during the 1770s decade.

Service history and disposition[]

New York and her sister gunboats Connecticut, Philadelphia, and Spitfire participated in the Battle of Valcour Island in Lake Champlain during the American Revolutionary War, part of a fleet commanded by Brigadier General Benedict Arnold. Square-rigged and with flat bottoms, the gunboats were unable to maneuver upwind, and would be forced to battle while anchored. During preparations for battle on 11 October 1776, the Enterprise dropped anchor abeam of New York.

That evening, as battle paused for the night, Arthur Cohn was sent by Arnold to notify Enterprise Captain Israel Dickenson that New York's CO was her only surviving officer. When first mate Henry Hardie suggested Enterprise rescue survivors of the burning Royal Savage, chaplain Adam Ghent recommended that they be taken to New York to serve as replacement crew.

Later, as a thick fog shrouded the lake, Trumbull quietly led the Enterprise, New York, and other war-torn ships in a silent retreat from the Royal Navy. New York rejoined the surviving ships at Fort Ticonderoga. (ST - Enterprise Logs short story: "The Veil at Valcour")
