The closing numbers of a days trading at the New York Stock Exchange were published daily in the New York Times. In the 1940s, Ardelia Mathis, like thousands of others on low incomes, would bet a small amount that a three digit number they picked would match those at the end of the New York Stock Exchange closing numbers in the Times.
