New Zealand was a nation-state comprised of a group of islands, dominated by two large islands, in the South Pacific Ocean on Earth. Some of the first Humans to settle in New Zealand were the Maori, descendants of which continued to live in reservations well into the 24th century, though New Zealand's population was predominantly descended from European colonists. By the 24th century, the New Zealand Penal Settlement - a Federation penal colony - was established in New Zealand. Among the more notable inmates to serve time at the settlement were Alexander Simmons, James Leyton, Tom Paris, Richard Bashir, and Galif jav Velk.
