By the 24th century, the New Zealand Penal Settlement - a Federation penal colony - was established in New Zealand. Among the more notable inmates to serve time at the settlement were James Leyton, Tom Paris, and Richard Bashir.

The Pennington School for writers is based in Wellington, New Zealand. One of its students is Jake Sisko. It was named for a 23rd century journalist, Tim Pennington (Star Trek: Vanguard novel series).
