The Niatok module was a large, floating artificial habitat, one of hundreds of biomes making up the Web of Worlds in the First Federation. It was located within the atmosphere of the class J gas giant Cherela.

Specifics

The Niatok module was a nature preserve which replicated the subarctic terrain of the planet Niatok, the original home of the Niatoko species. It was unpopulated except for tourists, and was approximately 1,000 kilometers wide.

A control center managed the artificial gravity system which kept the module afloat, powered by the planet's massive electromagnetic field.

History

In 2269, during an orbital bombardment by Dassik ships, a fusion charge ruptured the top of the dome of the Niatok module, allowing hydrogen and methane inside, where it immediately ignited with module's oxygen and filled the sky with blue flame. The higher pressure at ground level kept the fire at bay, allowing time for an evacuation. (TOS novel: The Face of the Unknown)
