Nichelle Nichols is an actress most famous for playing Nyota Uhura in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series (along with other voices), and the first six Star Trek films.
In addition to her canon performances, Nichols wrote the short story "Surprise!" in the anthology Star Trek: The New Voyages 2.
Her fictional character's closeness with her leader was foreshadowed by Nichelle's real-life, deep friendship with the show's "leader", creator Gene Roddenberry. Nichols was persuaded to stay on the series by the civil rights representatives of the time, and she accepted. To which, Roddenberry complied. Placing her in his high esteem whenever he and the cast attended conventions or press conferences.
