USS Defiant.

Nose art was a form of military art conceived to change the visual appearance of armed vehicles. It originated with historical dogfighters on Earth. (STO - Legacy mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

History and specifications[]

Aircraft in close-combat during Earth's 20th century included nose-art. (STO - Legacy mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", Zen Store description)

Orion interceptors

Orion interceptors in 2154.

In the 22nd century, the Orion Syndicate painted blood-like art on the bow and forward-facing wingtips on their Orion interceptors. In addition, sharp-toothed maws decorated the top of each wing. Ships of this type were active in the 2150s decade. (The Official Starships Collection Issue 163: "Orion Interceptor")

In the year 2154, the Earth vessel Enterprise NX-01 was raided by a pair of Orion interceptors. (ENT episode: "Borderland")

Following the Battle of Excalbia on stardate 84999.22[1] in early 2411, which saw the prominent involvement of hero ships from the Federation's past and present, the Defiant-class was among the tactical escort classes that received a refit to legendary starship qualifications. (STO - Legacy missions: "Measure of Morality (Part 2)", "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Defiant-patch

Defiant-class design patch.

The Starfleet Corps of Engineers at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards were inspired by historical dogfighters and the Defiant-class development patch of the 2370s to add nose art to the refitted Defiant-class legendary pilot warships. The central nose art consisted of cartoon-like eyes and maw with sharp teeth, imitating the development patch. The USS Defiant received this nose art. The other four styles referenced wars and conflicts the Defiant class had taken part in during the early 25th century, including the Federation-Klingon War of 2405-2410, the invasion of the 2800 rogue Dominion ships in 2409, the resurgence of the Borg Collective, and the Iconian War of 2410.
