Bow-and-arrow-wielding Nova XIII natives live alongside a giant race of humanoid cyclops. Abundant plant lifeforms and winged insects also live on the surface. Jungle vegetation regrows so fast that road construction is impractical.
In 2265, Earth's Trans-Galactic Zoological Federation landed a probe on Nova XIII, with robot telemetry being monitored by Nyota Uhura aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise. When transmissions were cut off, James T. Kirk and Montgomery Scott took Galileo down to the planet to investigate. They were captured by natives and brought before a government council. With their universal translator damaged, they were unable to communicate and suspected they were going to be executed. They quickly escaped back to the shuttlecraft and returned to the Enterprise, but were unable to retrieve the probe or its robot. (TOS comic: "Nova-Thirteen")
