A nut is a part of a plant formed as a seed, and often adapted as food by other lifeforms. In biology's strictest definition, a nut can only be formed by certain families of fruit-bearing plants, although in a culinary definition a nut can refer to any oil-bearing plant seed or pod.

Assorted nuts originating on Earth were among many Human foods prepared in the food processor units aboard the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). (TOS reference: Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise)

The names of Earth nuts were used as the code names of fighters and shuttlecraft in Oak Squad in the 2350s -- Brazil, Cashew, Chestnut, Pecan, and Acorn. (TNG novel: Red Sector)
