For other uses, see Oan.

The Oans were a technologically advanced civilization of sentient humanoid lifeforms that existed in several realities, commanding great respect as an ancient, wise and powerful species.

History

In a time-warped version of reality, altered by Q, the Oans had been thwarted in attempts to reign in the malignant Imperial Planets government. (TOS - Legion of Super-Heroes comic: "Issue 2")

In another reality, the Oans, through the survival of Ganthet, were the last species in the universe, the remainder of the universe having been consumed by Nekron. As a last ditch escape attempt, Ganthet opened a breach, emerging in the Kelvin timeline. The attempt killed him, leaving his corpse to be found by USS Enterprise. (TOS - The Spectrum War comic: "Issue 1")

Roughly a year after the Enterprise's discovery, the crew discovered the corpse of a broken Manhunter, signalling that Oans had counterparts in the Kelvin timeline. Managing to reach the Oa first, discovering these Oans to be less advanced than the ones that he had left behind, Thaal Sinestro managed to access the Central Power Battery, nearly using its power to bring about an Oan extinction before the crew of the Enterprise and the Green Lantern Corps managed to stop him. As the Oans rebuilt, Hal Jordan told them of how the Manhunters had turned against their creators in his reality leading the Oans to alter the programming of their creations so that they would remain benign as well as opening diplomatic ties with the United Federation of Planets who promised to aid the Oans in one day building a version of the Green Lanterns native to this reality. (TOS - Stranger Worlds comics: "Issue 1", "Issue 2", "Issue 3", "Issue 4", "Issue 5", "Issue 6")

The time travel-distortion caused an "evil" variation of reality that was similar in respects to Star Trek's mirror universe, but with elements of DC Comics characters. In particular, the Oans were, in unaltered history, the benefactors giving power to the power batteries of the Green Lantern Corps. The Legion's universe became crossed with the Star Trek universe due to a time distortion, so it is not clear if there is a Star Trek universe version of the Oans.
