The operations division was the corps of Starfleet personnel who specialized in operations management, engineering maintenance and security/military functions on starbases, starships and at Starfleet Command.

History and specifications[]

In United Earth Starfleet, the operations division consisted of the engineering department and the tactical department staff. They wore the same division color, red, on their Starfleet uniforms. (ENT episode & novelization: Broken Bow)

In the 25th century, Starfleet placed greater emphasis on the division between engineering and tactical. They now had different colors, with engineering retaining gold (yellow) as in recent decades, and tactical assuming red. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", character creation)

By the time of the Federation-Klingon War of 2405-2410, the Klingon Defense Force had also adopted Starfleet's current separation of engineering/gold, tactical/red and science/blue. (STO - Empire mission: "The Hunt is On")

This was carried over by the Romulan Republic Navy. The Romulan Republic was allied with both the Federation and the Klingon Empire. (STO - From the Ashes mission: "Explore the Flotilla")

This system was also adopted by the Vanguard Fleet of the Dominion. Like the KDF, the Jem'Hadar uniform did not reflect department affiliation. (STO - Engineered for War mission: "Hunt")

In the year 2410, the engineering departments of USS Voyager and another Delta Alliance ship worked together under Captain Harry Kim's lead to unlock an Iconian artifact recovered from Vaadwaur Prime. (STO - Delta Quadrant mission: "What's Left Behind")
