Organic farming was a specialized branch of agriculture which made use of the most traditional and natural farming techniques possible, rather than using artificial techniques such as chemical pesticides and fertilizers.

The Armada, a farming colony on the Maltese asteroid belt, was Federation approved organic, with birds and insects introduced into the ecosystem to control infestation, and fertilized with pungent natural fertilizer. (TNG - The Space Between comic: "Space Seeds")
